The Extraction Of Wisdom Teeth Is Necessary When They Are Prevented From Properly Erupting Within The Mouth

By the age of 18, the average adult has 32 teeth; 16 teeth on the top and 16 teeth on the bottom. Each tooth in the mouth has a specific name and function. The teeth in the front of the mouth (incisors, canine, and bicuspid teeth) are ideal for grasping and biting food into smaller pieces. The back teeth (molar teeth) are used to grind food up into a consistency suitable for swallowing.

The average mouth is made to hold only 28 teeth. It can be painful when 32 teeth try to fit in a mouth that holds only 28 teeth. These four other teeth are your third molars, also known as wisdom teeth.

Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt within the mouth. When they align properly and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, this does not generally happen. The extraction of wisdom teeth is necessary when they are prevented from properly erupting within the mouth. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to successfully erupt.

These poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems. When they are partially erupted, the opening around the teeth allows bacteria to grow and will eventually cause an infection. The result: swelling, stiffness, pain, and illness. The pressure from the erupting wisdom teeth may move other teeth and disrupt the orthodontic or natural alignment of teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom teeth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. Removal of the offending impacted teeth usually resolves these problems. Early removal is recommended to avoid such future problems and to decrease the surgical risk involved with the procedure.

Oral Examination

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of wisdom teeth, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to wisdom teeth are discussed.

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

With an oral examination and x-rays of the mouth, Dr. Hall, Dr. Bienstock or Dr. Jones can evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and predict if there are present or may be future problems. Studies have shown that early evaluation and treatment result in a superior outcome for the patient. Patients are generally first evaluated in the mid-teenage years by their dentist, orthodontist or by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

All outpatient surgery is performed under appropriate anesthesia to maximize patient comfort. Drs. Hall, Bienstock, and Jones have the training, license and experience to provide various types of anesthesia for patients to select the best alternative.

Removal of Wisdom Teeth

In most cases, the removal of wisdom teeth is performed under local anesthesia, laughing gas (nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia) or general anesthesia. These options, as well as the surgical risks (i.e., sensory nerve damage, sinus complications), will be discussed with you before the procedure is performed. Once the teeth are removed, the gum is sutured. To help control bleeding, bite down on the gauze placed in your mouth. You will rest under our supervision in the office until you are ready to be taken home. Upon discharge, your postoperative kit may include postoperative instructions, a prescription for pain medication, antibiotics, and a follow-up appointment in one week for suture removal. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us.

Our services are provided in an environment of optimum safety that utilizes modern monitoring equipment and staff who are experienced in anesthesia techniques.

Dr. Hall recently removed all 4 of my wisdom teeth. The procedure went very smoothly! The staff was very courteous and comforting. It was nice that I was able to fill out all the paperwork online beforehand so I wasn't overwhelmed with paperwork in the waiting room. I had general anesthesia so I didn't feel a thing and wasn't nervous. The procedure took less than an hour. I didn't have any pain for the rest of the day. The recovery was surprisingly easy. I followed Dr. Hall's instructions about rinsing, eating, etc. and had no problems. My swelling was minimal and I never even needed prescription pain medicine (just some Advil). I was able to comfortably eat whatever I wanted less than a week after the procedure. I highly recommend Dr. Hall and the staff at SB Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery!

I broke my molar on a very hard piece of French bread and was referred to Dr. Hall by my dentist. Dr. Hall and his staff were so kind, efficient and the office equipment was state of the art. I appreciated that Dr. Hall and his assistant explained everything that was being done. A pain free experience from start to finish, and aside from the reason I needed to be there, actually enjoyable.

Dear Folks at the Santa Barbara Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Center, I just wanted to drop you a short note lauding Dr. Bienstock and the entire staff for taking such good care of our daughter, Angela. When our family dentist recommended our 18 year old should have her wisdom teeth removed, we felt it best to have the surgery performed here in SB before she heads off to university, hundreds of miles away. From the first visit the staff was expertly able to calm all anxieties out daughter may have had about having this surgery performed. Dr. Bienstock personally explained the ins and outs or the procedure; his gentle and witty demeanor put Angela immediately at ease. All the assistants were detailed in their coaching of the do’s and don’ts o9f post operation care. Even though our daughter Angela is tough, one is always wary about the horror stories of what could happen if things don’t heal as expected. Thank you always for the follow up calls to make sure she was healing comfortably. We would most certainly recommend your office most highly to anyone considering any type of oral surgery.

Recently, my two year plus dental journey came to an end. I was ecstatic. My journey began when I found out my teeth were being destroyed, possible form the medication I was taking. As a result, I had teeth pulled and had to replace them with many implants and new attached teeth. The good news, I had a very smart and caring oral surgeon, Dr. Marc Bienstock. Dr. Bienstock informed me that I was one of the most difficult cases he had ever encountered. Fortunately for me he devised a plan that would allow me to have permanent new fixed teeth. Dud to his patience, intelligence, sense of humor and skills, today I can eat normally, tasted food once again and smile without embarrassment. I am very grateful to have found such a wonderful oral surgeon in Santa Barbara.

Our child was born with missing front teeth. Dr. Hall was referred to us by our orthodontist for implants to replace her missing teeth. After the orthodontist straightened her teeth and made space for her new front teeth, Dr. Hall did a bone grafting procedure to grow bone for two future implants. He later placed two implants with temporary crowns. The result was outstanding. She now has a beautiful smile and her confidence shines. He and his offices are kind, patient and comforting. I had heard of their office from many friends, after being a part of it I now know why they are so highly recommended.

Thank you for seeing my husband on such short notice and working him into your busy schedule when he called in pain from his broken tooth. You and your office staff were sensitive to both his pain and his fear of needles and procedures. Your understanding and compassion allowed him to relax and to be comfortable during the procedure. He was able to face the implant procedure without his usual anxiety. I am happy to say that he is thrilled with his tooth implant. His mouth is completely comfortable and he can’t even tell that the implant is there. We are so grateful to you and your staff.

To Whom It May Concern, It is with joy and privilege that I share my experience under the care of Dr. David Hall. In 2010 I was referred to Dr. Hall for a tooth problem and possible extraction. In no time Dr. Hall’s office scheduled my appointment. After the routine paperwork, I just wanted whatever needed done to happen without so much delay. The waiting room was quite lit up with a well maintained aquarium gazing the center of the area. That piece of décor is actually quite calming, I should say for anyone, both young and old. As I waited anxiously in the exam room Dr. Hall came in and with an assistant said hello and extended his hands to me. His gesture certainly put me at ease. Dr. Hall was incredibly gentle and patiently explained the procedure and asked me how I was feeling. Before long it was over. I could not be in better hands! With post-op instructions in hand, I was sure that the healing would go well. It was a blessing to have a positive dental experience with Dr. Hall. I do not even recall discomfort during the whole process and thereafter. His professional expertise and remarkable experience is highly commendable indeed.
